FB Paddle Racing was founded by Tom Blue in 2007. Tom participated in his first canoe race in an aluminum canoe in 1974 (the Virginia State Championships on the Shenandoah River) and has been messing about in boats ever since. He worked for the Nantahala Outdoor Center for twelve years, starting as a guide and an instructor. He currently lives and works in the Research Triangle region of North Carolina.
FB Paddle Racing's primary event, the annual French Broad Classique, was conceived by Andy Kluge in 2010. Andy has been racing canoes nationally and internationally since the early 1980's. He is a past member of the United States Whitewater Team and was National Champion in Decked Canoe Slalom (1990 C-2) and Open Canoe Slalom (1991 OC-2). Subsequently, Andy started training and racing in marathon canoes. Andy lives and works near Asheville and trains on the French Broad River ofen.
FB Paddle Racing has hosted two National Championships on the French Broad River: the 2014 USCA Aluminum Canoe/Downriver Kayak Nationals in Henderson County (upstream of Asheville), and the 2008 ACA Whitewater Open Canoe Downriver Nationals in Madison County (downstream of Asheville). In addition, FB Paddle Racing hosted the 2012 ACA Whitewater Open Canoe Downriver Nationals on the Nantahala River. Both ACA Nationals hosted by FB Paddle Racing were recognized with ACA's Sanctioned Event of the Year award.
